Alter do Chão

Alter do Chão is a municipality in the district of Portalegre (sub-region: Alto Alentejo), covering 362 km² in 4 parishes. 43 % of it is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.

The map finds 15 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Alter do Chão, Chancelaria and Cunheira. One of them has forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around it.
