Vila Franca de Xira is a municipality in the district of Lisboa (sub-region: Grande Lisboa), covering 318 km² in 6 parishes. Only 15 % of it is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.

The map finds 206 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Alverca do Ribatejo, Subserra and Vialonga. 66 of them have forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around them — among them Forte da Casa, Fonte Santa and Torre de Cima e Capelas.
