Monchique

Monchique is a municipality in the district of Faro (sub-region: Algarve), covering 395 km² in 3 parishes. Most of it, 93 %, is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.

The map finds 87 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Monchique, Marmelete and Alferce. 53 of them have forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around them, among them Montinho, Fóia and Caldas de Monchique.
