Mértola

Mértola is a municipality in the district of Beja (sub-region: Baixo Alentejo), covering 1,293 km² in 7 parishes. 50 % of it is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.

The map finds 142 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Corte do Pinto, Mértola and Mina de São Domingos. 21 of them have forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around them — among them Mértola, São João dos Caldeireiros and Corcha.
