Vila Real is a municipality in the district of Vila Real (sub-region: Douro), covering 379 km² in 20 parishes. 70 % of it is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.
The map finds 306 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Vila Real, Calçada and Abambres. 89 of them have forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around them, among them Urbanização Aleu, São Cibrão and Torgueda.
