Mação

Mação is a municipality in the district of Santarém (sub-region: Médio Tejo), covering 400 km² in 6 parishes. Most of it, 87 %, is forest land (woodland, scrub or natural pasture, according to the COS 2025 land-cover map): there, the strip around each house is 50 m wide.

The map finds 168 villages (groups of at least 10 buildings); the largest are Mação, Ortiga and Penhascoso. 56 of them have forest land on more than half of the 100 m strip around them, among them Pereiro, Chão de Codes and Amêndoa.
